Fortaleza San Felipe (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

Fortaleza San Felipe is a historic Spanish fortress in Puerto Plata, constructed during the 16th century to defend the northern coast of the Dominican Republic against pirate incursions. Ordered by King Philip II of Spain, the construction took place between 1564 and 1577 under the direction of Don Rengifo de Angulo. Strategically positioned on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the fort provided a comprehensive vantage point to guard the harbor entrance. Its massive stone walls reach a thickness of up to 2.4 meters and have witnessed various historical roles, including serving as a military outpost and later as a prison in the 19th century during the dictatorship of Pedro Santana. Notably, the national hero Juan Pablo Duarte was once held captive here. Today, the fortress operates as a museum, displaying a collection of colonial weaponry, historical documents, and original cannons. The well-preserved structure, featuring sentry boxes and a central courtyard, has visitors an authentic glimpse into Spanish colonial military engineering and Caribbean history.
