Church of San Dionisio in Higüey (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The Church of San Dionisio in Higüey is one of the oldest colonial religious structures in the Americas and a cornerstone of Dominican historical heritage. Construction of the current masonry building began in 1569 and was completed in 1572, replacing an earlier thatched-roof church established in 1512. The architecture is characterized by its massive stone walls and a sturdy bell tower, which have allowed the building to survive major earthquakes in 1684 and 1842. For over 400 years, it served as the home of the original image of the Virgin of Altagracia, the nation's spiritual patroness, until the icon was moved to the nearby modern basilica in 1971. The church interior houses a significant collection of Spanish colonial art, including gold and silver liturgical objects of great historical value. Today, the site remains an active parish and a historical monument that reflects the deep-rooted religious traditions of the eastern Dominican Republic, standing as a testament to early European architectural influence in the New World.
