Doraleh Desalination Plant (Djibouti)

Weather…

The Doraleh Desalination Plant, part of the landmark PEPER project (Production d'Eau Potable par Énergie Renouvelable), is a vital infrastructure for the water supply of Djibouti's capital. Given the extreme water scarcity and the growing population, the construction of this plant, funded by the European Union, was of strategic importance. The facility utilizes advanced reverse osmosis technology to convert seawater into high-quality drinking water. In its first phase, the plant has a capacity of approximately 22,500 cubic meters per day, with the option to double this capacity to 45,000 cubic meters. A unique feature is the planned coupling with the nearby Ghoubbet wind farm to make the energy-intensive desalination process more sustainable. The plant secures the water supply for over 250,000 residents in Djibouti City and its surrounding areas. By reducing reliance on depleted underground aquifers, the project contributes significantly to environmental sustainability and public health improvements.
