Sankal is a small town in the Dikhil Region of southern Djibouti. It is located in a vast, arid plain known as the Grand Bara, one of the flattest and most barren areas in the country. The climate is extremely hot and dry, with minimal rainfall throughout the year. Sankal serves as a vital hub for the nomadic Afar and Issa communities who inhabit this harsh environment. The town functions as an administrative center for the surrounding area, providing basic services such as a school and a small health clinic. The economy is almost entirely dependent on livestock, with camels and goats being the primary animals raised, adapted to the desert climate. Water supply is a constant challenge, and the community relies on wells. Sankal is situated along National Route 1, which gives it some strategic importance for transport and connectivity between the capital and the southern border with Ethiopia. The settlement itself is a mix of traditional huts and more simple modern constructions.
