Grand Bara Desert (Djibouti)

Weather…

The Grand Bara Desert is for adventurers and photographers drawn to the extreme landscapes of Djibouti. This gigantic clay and salt pan, the remnant of a dried-up lake, stretches for dozens of kilometers and has a surreal experience of absolute emptiness and silence. The blindingly white surface reflects the sun intensely, creating wide-open mirages on the horizon. Despite the apparent hostility to life, the region is not completely devoid of it. Occasionally, antelopes, jackals, or herds of camels can be spotted foraging for sparse vegetation at the desert's edge. There is no specific gastronomy directly in the desert, so visitors must bring ample provisions and plenty of water. Nearby traditional nomadic camps sometimes offer tea and flatbread to travelers. The Grand Bara Desert is located in southern Djibouti and is bisected by a paved national highway, making access from the capital city very straightforward. The drive takes about an hour and a half. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon between November and February to avoid the punishing midday heat and to capture the soft light for photography.
