Yaguer Highlands (Djibouti)

Weather…

The Yaguer Highlands are an extensive, elevated region in southwestern Djibouti, characterized by a prominent plateau and deep valleys. Geologically, the highlands consist of massive layers of flood basalts erupted during the formation of the Afar Rift. These rock layers form a natural barrier and influence local wind patterns and rainfall, resulting in slightly denser vegetation than in the coastal plains. The highlands have historically been an important grazing area for the herds of the Afar and Issa peoples, especially during the drier months. The region is also rich in mineral resources and gives fascinating insights into the tectonic history of the Horn of Africa. Over time, erosion has created spectacular mesas and isolated rock spires, giving the landscape an almost surreal character.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The highlands are reached via 4WD from Djibouti City heading southwest, where one should expect rough tracks and very rocky terrain along the way.
📅
Best season
The cooler months from November to February are good to avoid the extreme heat of the desert summer, which can make hiking quite hazardous.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is characterized by deep erosion gullies and rugged volcanic rock, requiring careful footwork and good orientation skills in the field.
🎒
What to bring
Essential items include high-SPF sun protection, plenty of drinking water, and durable hiking boots that can withstand the sharp edges of volcanic stones.
🅿️
Parking
There are no marked parking areas; vehicles are usually left near local settlements, often under the supervision of a local guide or resident.
⚠️
Safety
Heatstroke is the primary risk; carry far more water than you expect to need and avoid physical exertion during the direct midday sun.
⏱️
Time needed
A day trip is possible, but staying for two days allows for a deeper exploration of the spectacular geological formations and remote valleys.
