The Kolding Old Bridge (Sønderbro) has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages when it served as the most vital crossing point over the Kolding River. Historically, this location marked the boundary between the Kingdom of Denmark and the Duchy of Schleswig, giving the bridge immense strategic and customs significance. The current stone structure reflects 19th-century modernization efforts aimed at accommodating the rapidly increasing commercial traffic in the region. Near the bridge stood the customs house, where merchants and travelers were processed when crossing the border. The bridge was the site of numerous historical events, including significant military maneuvers during the Schleswig Wars. Today, it remains a welcoming historic feature of Kolding's cityscape, connecting the old town with southern districts. It serves as a reminder of Kolding's former status as a key border town with major administrative functions.
