The Old Little Belt Bridge (Den Gamle Lillebæltsbro) is a combined road and railway bridge connecting the Jutland peninsula with the island of Funen. Constructed between 1925 and 1935, its opening was a monumental achievement in Danish civil engineering. The bridge effectively replaced the time-consuming ferry services across the Little Belt strait, establishing the first direct overland rail connection between Copenhagen and mainland Europe. The massive steel structure spans a total length of 1,178 meters and is characterized by its iconic lattice girder design. With a clearance height of 33 meters, it allows for the passage of maritime traffic through the strait. Since the inauguration of the New Little Belt Bridge in 1970, the old bridge has primarily served regional road traffic and national rail services. A unique tourist attraction known as 'Bridgewalking' allows visitors to walk across the very top of the bridge structure under professional guidance, reaching a height of 60 meters above sea level. The bridge gives spectacular views of the Little Belt and the neighboring towns of Fredericia and Middelfart. It stands as a national symbol of Denmark's commitment to infrastructure and is preserved as a significant industrial heritage monument.
