Agård Strand

Agård Strand is a geologically fascinating coastal stretch on the island of Mors in the Limfjord, renowned for its dramatic cliff formations. The area is defined by the presence of 'moler' (diatomaceous earth), a rare sedimentary rock formed approximately 54 million years ago during the Eocene epoch from diatom shells and volcanic ash layers. The current relief was significantly shaped during the Weichselian glaciation, as advancing ice sheets pushed and folded the soft moler layers into steep, vertical structures. These folds are clearly visible in the coastal profiles and serve as a rich source of fossils, including exceptionally preserved fish, birds, and insects. The beach itself consists of a mix of fine sand and shingles, constantly replenished by the erosion of the towering cliffs. Historically, moler mining was a key industry on Mors, leaving a mark on the landscape through former quarry sites. Today, visitors can walk along the shoreline to observe these unique geological sculptures formed by natural forces. The ecological niche of the cliffs provides a protected habitat for specialized flora and various species of nesting seabirds.
