Aabenraa is a historic port city in the Region of Southern Denmark, situated at the head of the Aabenraa Fjord in southern Jutland. First mentioned in the 12th century, the town developed into a major center for shipbuilding and trade due to its sheltered location. Between 1864 and 1920, following the Second Schleswig War, Aabenraa was part of the Kingdom of Prussia, which left a lasting impact on the region's architecture and cultural identity. Today, the city is home to the only deep-water port in the Danish-German border region, playing a pivotal role in freight handling for southern Denmark. Beyond its economic significance, Aabenraa serves as a cultural hub for the German minority in North Schleswig. Key landmarks include the 15th-century Brundlund Castle and the historic St. Nicolai Church. The town is also renowned for its well-preserved 18th-century townhouses that line its historic streets.
