Furesø Bakke (Denmark)

Weather…

Furesø Bakke encompasses the undulating terrain along the northern and southern shores of Lake Furesø, the deepest lake in Denmark. The hill ranges in this area reach elevations of up to 60 meters, offering wide vistas across the water and adjacent woodlands like Jonstrup Vang. Geomorphologically, it is a moraine landscape shaped by massive glacial advances during the Weichselian glaciation. The area has for decades been a favored destination for hikers and cyclists from nearby Copenhagen. The steep slopes descending toward the lakeshore are often densely forested, providing habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna. Historically, the region hosted early agricultural settlements, with ancient burial mounds still visible in the vicinity today. Due to its status as a Natura 2000 protected area, the natural integrity of the hills is preserved for the future. The combination of deep waters and prominent coastal elevations makes this site a unique feature of the Danish topography.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The hilly area immediately surrounding the Furesø is perfectly integrated into the Greater Copenhagen trail network and is often accessible by S-train. An extensive network of cycling and hiking paths leads directly from the lakeshore into the glacial hills.
📅
Best season
The deciduous forests atop the hills are highly attractive, especially in spring (for bright green leaves) and autumn (for intense fall colors). In mid-summer, the dense tree canopy provides wonderful cooling shade for relaxed hikes around the scenic lake.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The memorable glacial landscape features constant ups and downs, with excellently maintained forest paths winding right around the entire lake area. The inclines are strictly moderate, but on much longer loops, the elevation gains can add up for novice walkers.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable running or completely lightweight hiking shoes are recommended for a circular route, as the forest paths can be soft or highly root-filled in sections. On particularly warm days, ample drinking water and insect repellent should definitely be brought.
🅿️
Parking
There are several very easily accessible public car parks totally surrounding the Furesø, often perfectly near bathing spots or marinas that serve as starting points. On beautiful weekends, however, extreme crowding occurs due to day-trippers from the capital.
⚠️
Safety
Hiking in this heavily frequented area is extremely safe, though the main paths are very often shared directly with fast cyclists or enthusiastic joggers. On smaller forest trails away from the main routes, pay much closer attention to exposed tree roots.
⏱️
Time needed
The duration of a tour in Furesø Bakke genuinely varies greatly, usually ranging from one to two hours for a quick walk to a half-day for entire lake loops. It is a completely excellent place to escape the nearby bustling city for a few highly relaxing hours.
