Fungurume is a major mining town located in the Lualaba Province in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Situated approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Likasi, it forms one of the country's most critical industrial hubs alongside the neighboring settlement of Tenke. The town is globally renowned for the Tenke Fungurume mining project, which operates one of the world's largest copper and cobalt mines, significantly contributing to the global supply of these essential battery raw materials. The region's geological formation is part of the Central African Copperbelt, a zone characterized by exceptionally high mineral deposits. Beyond mining, the infrastructure of the N1 national road and the railway connection to Lubumbashi define the urban landscape and the local economy. In recent decades, Fungurume has experienced massive population growth and rapid urbanization driven by industrial expansion. Despite its economic significance, the region continues to face substantial challenges regarding social development and environmental protection. Its strategic location between the mining centers of Kolwezi and Lubumbashi makes Fungurume an indispensable node within the Congolese heavy industry sector.
