Bunkeya (Yeke Kingdom Capital) (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Bunkeya was the magnificent capital of the Yeke Kingdom, which rose to regional prominence in the late 19th century under the rule of Msiri. A trader of Nyamwezi origin, Msiri established Bunkeya as a pivotal commercial hub that controlled the lucrative copper and ivory trade between the African interior and the coasts of East and West Africa. The city was exceptionally large and cosmopolitan for its time, attracting merchants and diplomats from diverse backgrounds. The Yeke Kingdom was characterized by its sophisticated military organization, though it was also known for Msiri's absolute and often harsh governance. The decline of Bunkeya as an independent power center came in 1891 when a Belgian expedition led by Captain Stairs reached the capital. During a dramatic confrontation, Msiri was shot and killed, paving the way for the annexation of the mineral-rich Katanga region by King Leopold II's Congo Free State. Today, Bunkeya remains a site of great historical significance, preserving the memory of pre-colonial statehood. Msiri's descendants still reside in the area, keeping the Yeke cultural traditions alive.
