The MIBA Diamond Mine (Société Minière de Bakwanga) in Mbuji-Mayi is the historic epicenter of industrial diamond production in the DR Congo. For decades, it ranked as one of the world's leading producers of industrial-grade diamonds, which are vital for cutting tools, drills, and various high-precision engineering applications due to their extreme hardness. The deposits consist of primary kimberlite pipes as well as extensive alluvial sites located within the Kasai-Oriental Province. Following a long period of economic stagnation and technical challenges, the government is currently making concerted efforts to restructure the company and attract fresh international investment partners. The city of Mbuji-Mayi effectively grew and expanded around MIBA's mining activities, remaining heavily dependent on its operations. The successful revival of MIBA is seen as a crucial step for the socio-economic recovery and development of the entire Kasai region.

The site is heavily secured and generally not accessible to visitors. From certain elevated points in the city, however, the waste dumps and extraction machinery can be seen.
