- Prices for basic goods can be surprisingly high here due to the influx of mining cash.
- The dry season is extremely dusty; bring protective eyewear and scarves.
- Photography near active mining sites is strictly prohibited and can lead to trouble with local authorities.
- Cash is king. Ensure you have enough Congolese Francs, as card facilities are virtually non-existent.

Katanda is a town located in the Kasaï-Oriental Province in the central Democratic Republic of the Congo, internationally renowned as a site of major archaeological significance. In the 1980s, bone harpoon points were discovered along the nearby riverbanks (associated with the Katanda sites), dated to approximately 90,000 years ago. these finds revolutionized the understanding of early Homo sapiens' technological development in Africa. Beyond its scientific importance, Katanda is today a major hub for diamond mining in the Bakalanga sector. The town's economy is driven by artisanal mining in the region's diamond-bearing gravels and by productive agriculture that supplies food to the nearby city of Mbuji-Mayi. Geographically, Katanda is situated in a hilly landscape rich in natural resources, though it faces environmental challenges due to intensive mining activities. The town functions as the administrative headquarters for the Katanda Territory.
