💡 Tips
- To see the Hranice Abyss, take the train to 'Teplice nad Bečvou' station, which is much closer to the site than the main Hranice station.
- You can't see the bottom of the Hranice Abyss as it's mostly underwater, so adjust your expectations before taking the forest hike.
- Make sure to walk through the main square (Masarykovo náměstí) to admire the preserved historical arcades and the old town hall.
- Taste the mineral water straight from the public springs in the adjacent spa town of Teplice nad Bečvou.
- Local bus connections between the train station, Hranice town center, and the spa area are frequent, making a car unnecessary for basic exploring.
🍽 Food
A strongly scented, locally famous ripened cheese served with bread and beer in traditional pubs.
Buy these large, sweet round wafers freshly made in the adjacent Teplice nad Bečvou spa.
A classic, rich meat stew that is a staple at the historic restaurants around Masaryk Square.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look for the small kiosks in Teplice nad Bečvou selling boxed wafers in various flavors to take home.
Stop by a local vinotéka (wine shop) in the Hranice town center for authentic Moravian bottles.
Walk among the classical pavilions and old trees along the Bečva river in the nearby spa town.

Hranice, often called Hranice na Moravě (Moravian Weisskirchen), is located at the Moravian Gate, a historic valley connecting the Sudetes and the Carpathians. This strategic location made the town an important military site. It is home to the oldest military school in the Czech lands, existing since the 19th century. The historic center is dominated by a Renaissance chateau and the parish Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist. A worldwide curiosity is the Hranice Abyss (Hranická propast), considered the deepest flooded freshwater abyss in the world. Its explored depth exceeds 450 meters, but the bottom has not yet been reached. The town is also a spa, specializing in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
