Tábor City Fortifications (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The city fortifications of Tábor are among the most significant medieval defense systems in Central Europe. They were constructed in the 15th century by the Hussites, who founded Tábor as their impregnable stronghold. The system consisted of a double ring of massive walls, deep moats, and numerous bastions, strategically positioned on a rocky promontory overlooking the Lužnice River. Its uniqueness lies in the sophisticated integration of natural terrain with advanced military engineering of the period. The most famous preserved part is the Bechyně Tower (Hláska) and the adjacent Bechyně Gate, which is the only surviving city gate of the original fortification. Although parts of the walls were dismantled over the centuries, the remaining sections still provide a powerful testament to the defensive prowess of the Hussite era. The fortifications are now a national cultural monument and a key part of the historic city center.
