Hranice na Moravě, frequently referred to simply as Hranice, is a historic town located in the Olomouc Region of the Czech Republic. It is situated in the Moravian Gate, a geomorphological gap that has served as a natural corridor for trade routes since antiquity, including the famous Amber Road. First documented in 1169, the town features a well-preserved historic center, which was declared a monument zone in 1992, centered around a 16th-century Renaissance chateau with a notable arcaded courtyard. Adjacent to the town is the Hranice Abyss (Hranická propast), the world's deepest flooded sinkhole, with a confirmed depth of 450 meters and an estimated potential depth of over 1,000 meters. Economically, Hranice is a significant industrial hub, hosting major manufacturing facilities for pumping equipment and automotive components. The town's strategic position is further emphasized by its role as a major railway junction connecting the capital with the eastern parts of the country and neighboring Poland.
