Akrotiri Peninsula (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Akrotiri Peninsula is located on the southern coast of Cyprus, directly south of the city of Limassol, and contains the island's southernmost point, Cape Gata. The central feature of the peninsula is the Akrotiri Salt Lake, the largest inland body of water on the island and a wetland of international importance. Geologically, Akrotiri was once an offshore island that became attached to the mainland via a massive tombolo formed by silt from the Kouris River. Historically, the area has been inhabited since antiquity, with significant archaeological finds dating back to the Neolithic period. Today, a large portion of the peninsula constitutes part of the Western Sovereign Base Area, controlled by the United Kingdom and housing the RAF Akrotiri airbase. Despite its military importance, the peninsula remains an ecological haven, protected under the Ramsar Convention for attracting thousands of flamingos and other migratory birds each winter. The towering cliffs on the southern side provide spectacular vistas and serve as nesting sites for endangered birds of prey.
