Akrotiri Peninsula Coast (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Akrotiri Peninsula, situated on the southern coast of Cyprus near Limassol, represents one of the island's most ecologically and strategically significant regions. This landmass is dominated by the Akrotiri Salt Lake, the largest inland body of water on the island, which covers approximately 10.65 square kilometers and serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds, including thousands of Greater Flamingos. Geologically, the peninsula features a diverse coastline ranging from the dramatic limestone cliffs of Cape Zevgari to the sandy stretches of Lady's Mile Beach. Historically, the area has been inhabited since the Epipaleolithic period, with the site of Akrotiri Aetokremnos providing evidence of human presence dating back to roughly 10,000 BC. Today, much of the peninsula is part of the Western Sovereign Base Area, a British Overseas Territory established under the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee. The region also hosts the Monastery of Saint Nicholas of the Cats, which according to tradition was founded in the 4th century AD to combat a snake infestation.
