Kourion (Cyprus)

Weather…

Kourion was one of the most significant ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus, situated on a spectacular limestone cliff on the southwestern coast. The archaeological site encompasses impressive remains from various eras, with the Greco-Roman theater from the 2nd century BC serving as its architectural centerpiece. It originally accommodated around 3,500 spectators and is still used today for cultural performances. Particularly noteworthy are the House of Eustolios with its well-preserved 5th-century AD mosaic floors and the early Christian basilica. The city was largely destroyed by a series of severe earthquakes in 365 AD and was subsequently abandoned. Visitors can today explore the complex water pipe systems and the ruins of the Roman baths, which testify to the advanced engineering skills of the inhabitants. The location also gives an expansive view over the Bay of Episkopi and the Mediterranean coastline.
