Kouris River Delta (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Kouris River Delta is located on the southern coast of Cyprus, west of Limassol, and serves as the mouth of the island's longest river. Originating in the Troodos Mountains, the Kouris travels approximately 38 kilometers before discharging into Episkopi Bay. Ecologically, the delta is highly significant, supporting crucial wetland habitats despite the flow regulation imposed by the Kouris Dam, completed in 1988. Sediment deposits over millennia have created a fertile coastal plain, which is extensively cultivated with citrus groves and vineyards. Historically, the delta lies adjacent to the ancient city of Kourion, one of Cyprus's most prominent archaeological sites. The delta's natural dynamics were considerably altered by the construction of the dam, the largest on the island, impacting coastal erosion and sediment transport patterns. Nevertheless, the estuarine region remains an important sanctuary for waterfowl and a key site for studying the interaction between hydrology and human land management. The surrounding area also features striking views of the Episkopi limestone cliffs.
