Veli Lošinj is positioned in a narrow bay in the southeastern part of Lošinj island. Despite its name (meaning 'Large Lošinj'), it is now much smaller and quieter than its neighbor, Mali Lošinj. The town is famous for its grand villas built by former sea captains and the striking pink Church of St. Anthony the Abbot, which overlooks the harbor. Thanks to its unique microclimate, Veli Lošinj was declared an official health resort of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in the late 19th century. A standout feature is the 'Blue World' Marine Research Center, dedicated to the protection of the bottlenose dolphins that inhabit the surrounding waters. Visitors can learn about marine biology and conservation here. The harbor is lined with cafés and restaurants serving fresh seafood seasoned with local Mediterranean herbs. A short coastal walk leads to the idyllic Rovenska fishing harbor, home to a beautiful pebble beach and a massive stone breakwater dating back to 1892. The town's vegetation is lush, featuring many exotic plants brought back by sailors from their global voyages. Veli Lošinj is a sanctuary for those seeking relaxation and natural beauty.
