Šopot is located in the fertile Ravni Kotari plain, just a few kilometers from Benkovac. The village gained immense historical significance when a stone lintel from the Church of St. Asel was discovered, bearing the name of the Croatian Prince Branimir and the year 888. This inscription is one of the most important archaeological finds in Croatia, as it is the first to mention the name 'Croat' alongside a ruler's title. The village environment is predominantly agricultural, with vast vineyards and olive groves stretching across the red soil of the hinterland. Traditional stone architecture still characterizes many parts of the settlement, showcasing the long history of habitation in this strategic region between the mountains and the sea. The Church of St. Asel continues to stand as a landmark of spiritual and national identity. For history buffs, Šopot is an essential stop while exploring the Zadar hinterland. Nearby, the medieval Kličevica fortress gives a glimpse into the region's defensive past. Visitors can enjoy local wine tastings and traditional Dalmatian meals in nearby rural households, featuring specialties like roasted lamb and local sheep cheese.
