Savudrija is situated at the northwestern tip of the Istrian peninsula, marking the westernmost point of Croatia. Its skyline is dominated by the 36-meter-high lighthouse, built in 1818 by the Austrian statesman Metternich, making it the oldest active lighthouse on the Adriatic Sea. A romantic legend about a secret love affair between the prince and a local lady surrounds its history. The shoreline features a mix of rocky beaches and lush pine groves that provide natural shade. The most distinctive feature of the harbor is the sight of fishing boats suspended from wooden cranes. This local tradition, known as 'levata', protects the vessels from the fierce Adriatic storms. Savudrija is a haven for active travelers, offering access to the Parenzana cycling trail and professional golf courses nearby. The local culinary scene is rich in fresh catches from the sea, often paired with premium Istrian malvasia wine and olive oil. Despite modern developments, the village retains its authentic charm as an ancient fishing port, offering a peaceful alternative to the larger resorts in Umag.
