Morosini-Grimani Castle (Croatia)

Weather…

The Morosini-Grimani Castle in Svetvinčenat is one of Istria's best-preserved examples of Venetian architectural heritage. Originally a 13th-century fortress, the site underwent several transformations due to military conflicts and fires over the centuries. Its current imposing Renaissance appearance was established in the late 16th century when the Venetian Grimani family commissioned a comprehensive reconstruction. The castle spans the entire northern side of Svetvinčenat’s central square and is defined by its three corner towers and massive defensive walls. The crest of the Grimani family remains clearly visible above the main entrance to this day. Following an extensive restoration process, the castle reopened to the public in 2020 as a state-of-the-art visitor center featuring multimedia exhibitions on Istrian history and intangible heritage. The spacious courtyard is a popular venue for knightly tournaments and medieval festivals, which bring the historic spirit of the town back to life. Visitors can explore the residential wings, the armory, and the original prison cells within the complex.
