Lika Plateau (Croatia)

Weather…

The Lika Plateau is a vast highland region in central Croatia, bounded by the Velebit mountains to the west and Mala Kapela to the east. This region is part of the Dinaric karst system and is characterized by large karst fields (poljes) where rivers like the Lika and Gacka flow before disappearing into sinkholes. The climate is strictly continental, featuring very cold winters and cool summers, which limits agricultural activities primarily to livestock farming and the cultivation of the famous Lika potato. Historically, Lika was a military frontier region between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, significantly shaping local culture and defensive architecture. The region is home to the Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia's oldest and most famous protected area, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. Lika is also the birthplace of the world-renowned inventor Nikola Tesla, whose childhood home in Smiljan is now a museum. Despite its low population density, Lika is a crucial transport corridor, traversed by the A1 highway connecting the north and south of the country. Today, the region focuses on sustainable tourism and the promotion of its authentic natural products.

Terrain & paths
The region is characterized by a mix of flat plains, dense forests, and surrounding karst mountains. There are countless paths whose general difficulty smoothly ranges from leisurely strolls all the way up to highly demanding mountain ascents.
