Euphrasian Basilica (Croatia)

Weather…

The Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč is an outstanding masterpiece of Byzantine art and architecture in the Mediterranean region. It was constructed in the 6th century under Bishop Euphrasius on the site of an earlier church. The complex includes the basilica itself, an atrium, a baptistery, the episcopal palace, and remnants of earlier floor mosaics. The basilica is internationally renowned for its magnificent wall mosaics in the apse, which depict Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Bishop Euphrasius himself. These mosaics are among the best-preserved examples of Byzantine mosaic craftsmanship in the world. The architecture of the basilica seamlessly integrates classical Roman traditions with emerging influences from Constantinople. Since 1997, the Euphrasian Basilica has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. It remains the active cathedral of the Diocese of Poreč-Pula and is regularly used for liturgical services and classical music performances.
