Mrkopalj is situated at an altitude of 825 meters in the heart of Gorski Kotar. The town has a long tradition in winter tourism and is regarded as the birthplace of skiing in Croatia, with the first organized ski course held back in 1913. The surrounding area is characterized by dense coniferous forests and the peaks of Bitoraj and Čelimbaša mountains. The subalpine climate ensures snowy winters. The Čelimbaša ski resort features runs for various skill levels and a sledding track. Nearby is the Zagmajna biathlon center, a key nordic skiing hub in Croatia. During summer, Mrkopalj transforms into a destination for hikers and mountain bikers. A special natural phenomenon nearby are the Bijele and Samarske stijene, two strictly protected reserves featuring bizarre limestone formations.
