Bellevue Beach
Bellevue Beach is one of Dubrovnik's most spectacular swimming spots, nestled deep within a picturesque, steep-sided bay on the Gorica peninsula. Surrounded by dramatic, high cliffs that plunge into the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, this pebble beach offers a unique and sheltered environment that feels secluded despite its proximity to the city center. The striking contrast between the rugged stone walls, the lush Mediterranean vegetation, and the vibrant azure water creates a breathtaking landscape.
Beyond its natural beauty, Bellevue is legendary among locals for its rich sporting history. It is the spiritual home of the 'Divlja liga' (Wild League), a famous amateur water polo championship. Visitors can often see the water polo pitch set up in the sea, adding an authentic local vibe. The bay's natural shape provides excellent acoustics and protection from most winds, making the water exceptionally calm and inviting.
While the descent down the long set of stairs requires effort, the reward is well worth it. The beach is a perfect blend of raw nature and comfortable amenities, with a relaxed café offering refreshments right by the sea. Because of the high cliffs facing east, the beach naturally falls into refreshing shade in the late afternoon, making it a perfect retreat for those who wish to avoid the intense midday sun.
