Mal Pais and the incredibly characterful neighboring village of Cabuya perfectly form a deeply serene, completely bohemian sanctuary permanently located at the very southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. Known universally for its purely raw and untamed rugged beauty, this highly isolated area naturally attracts avid professional surfers, intensely dedicated yogis, and passionate wilderness lovers seeking a genuine, quiet escape from heavily commercialized tourist hubs. The completely dramatic shoreline heavily features striking volcanic rocky outcroppings, expansive and fascinating tidal pools, and beautifully hidden sandy coves, all magnificently framed by lush, monkey-filled tropical jungle. Cabuya is exceptionally famous for its entirely unique local island cemetery, which is intriguingly accessible strictly by foot only during low ocean tides, as well as successfully serving as the primary southern gateway to the heavily protected, pristine Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. The local bohemian food scene is beautifully eclectic and spirited, seamlessly blending strictly organic, highly health-conscious rustic cafes with deeply traditional Costa Rican coastal seafood shacks. Primary access is almost exclusively via the Puntarenas car ferry directly to Paquera, strictly followed by a notably bumpy but undeniably impressive scenic coastal drive. The established dry season from December to April is optimally great for broad exploring.
