Bijagua
Bijagua is a truly serene, rural town beautifully located in the lush and verdant northern highlands of Costa Rica. It is primarily celebrated worldwide as the magnificent gateway to the renowned Tenorio Volcano National Park. The absolute star attraction of this region is the striking Rio Celeste, a river uniquely famous for its surreal, bright turquoise waters and a sweeping waterfall that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale. Surrounded by expanses of dense, untouched rainforest, the entire Bijagua area features an incredible level of biodiversity. This makes it an absolute paradise for avid birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts eager for wildlife spotting, including frequent sightings of two-toed sloths, colorful toucans, and tapirs. The town itself wonderfully maintains a quiet, authentic Costa Rican charm that escapes the heavy crowds. The optimal time to visit is undoubtedly during the dry season, spanning from December to April, when the jungle trails are significantly less muddy and the river's distinctive blue hue is most lively. Travelers can comfortably reach this quiet find by car via scenic routes from either Liberia or the capital, San José.
