Tortuga Island
Tortuga Island (Isla Tortuga) is a picture-first-rate tropical paradise located in the Gulf of Nicoya, easily recognizable by its swaying coconut palms and brilliantly white sand beaches. It is one of Costa Rica’s most popular day-trip destinations, drawing visitors who seek a classic Caribbean-style beach experience on the Pacific coast. The island's calm, crystal-clear turquoise waters make it an idyllic spot for swimming and snorkeling. While the island itself gives a well-suited setting for relaxation, it is also a hub for soft adventure. Snorkelers and scuba divers can explore the surrounding volcanic rock reefs and sunken shipwrecks, which are home to colorful tropical fish, manta rays, and moray eels. On land, visitors can enjoy beach volleyball, rent kayaks, or hike up the forested hills for spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding gulf. Since there are no hotels on Tortuga Island, access is via organized boat tours departing daily from coastal towns like Jacó or Puntarenas. The dry season, from December to April, guarantees sunny skies and the best visibility.
