In contrast to its bustling neighbor Santa Teresa, Mal País retains the peaceful, laid-back atmosphere of a traditional Costa Rican fishing village. Visitors come here to escape the crowds and enjoy the rugged, untamed beauty of the southern Nicoya Peninsula. The coastline is characterized by dramatic volcanic rock formations and tidal pools, making it more of a destination for exploration, beachcombing, and surfing than for simple swimming. Nature is the main attraction, with dense jungle spilling right down to the ocean's edge. Wildlife is abundant, and you can frequently spot monkeys and colorful tropical birds. The gastronomy is much more authentic and low-key, centering around small, family-run restaurants (sodas) that serve fresh seafood sourced directly from the local fishing fleet. Getting to Mal País involves the same route as Santa Teresa, usually by ferry followed by a bumpy drive south on dirt roads. The dry season from December to April is well-suited for a visit, as the roads are much more manageable.
