Playa Hermosa
Situated just south of the bustling town of Jacó, Playa Hermosa is widely recognized as one of Costa Rica's most consistent and powerful surf breaks. The rip currents are notoriously strong and the waves pitch close to the shore, making it a venue for international surfing competitions rather than a place for casual swimming. The fine, dark volcanic sand provides a striking contrast against the deep blue ocean and the verdant backing hills. The area acts as a protected wildlife refuge (Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Playa Hermosa), established primarily to conserve the nesting grounds of the Olive Ridley sea turtles. The gastronomic scene is laid-back and focused on beachfront clubs and small boutique hotels offering cold drinks, fresh tacos, and prime views of the surfing action. Getting there is incredibly straightforward, as Playa Hermosa is located directly off the paved Route 34, the Costanera Sur, just about two hours from San José. Surfers visit year-round, but the largest swells predictably occur during the wet season from May to November.
