The Los Flamencos Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna is located in the La Guajira department near the village of Camarones and was designated as a protected area in 1977. Its main attraction is the American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber), which inhabits the shallow brackish waters of the Navío Quebrado and Grande lagoons in large colonies.
