Dunhuang
Dunhuang, situated at the edge of the Gobi Desert in Gansu Province, was a major stop on the ancient Silk Road. It is most famous for the Mogao Caves, a wide-open UNESCO World Heritage site containing some of the finest examples of Buddhist art in the world, spanning over 1,000 years. The city is surrounded by colossal sand dunes, most notably the Echoing-Sand Mountain, where the wind creates a distinct singing sound. Positioned within these massive dunes is the Crescent Lake, a miracle of nature that has existed for centuries without being swallowed by the sand. Visitors can ride camels, slide down the sand dunes, and experience the rich historical tapestry of a city that once bridged East and West. The local cuisine reflects its geographical crossroads, offering delicious lamb skewers, yellow noodles, and sweet apricots. Dunhuang has its own airport and railway station, connecting it to Lanzhou and Xi'an. The best time to visit is from May to October, as winters are bitterly cold and early spring often brings severe sandstorms. A visit to Dunhuang is a profound journey into the heart of China's ancient trade and spiritual heritage.
