Tunxi & Hongcun (China)

Weather…

Tunxi and Hongcun, located near the famous Yellow Mountains (Huangshan) in Anhui province, are quintessential examples of ancient Chinese village life. Travelers are captivated by the incredibly well-preserved Hui-style architecture, characterized by white walls, dark gray tiles, and ornate horse-head gables. Hongcun, in particular, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and famously resembles the shape of an ox. Walking through Hongcun's narrow, cobblestone alleys alongside ancient water channels leading to the central Moon Pond is like stepping into a traditional Chinese ink painting. Tunxi, the historic center of Huangshan city, provides the spirited Tunxi Ancient Street, lined with centuries-old shops selling tea, inkstones, and local snacks. The regional Huizhou cuisine features wild herbs, fermented mandarin fish, and bamboo shoots. Huangshan City has an airport (Tunxi Airport) and high-speed rail stations, making access from Shanghai or Hangzhou very convenient. From Tunxi, buses readily take tourists to Hongcun. The well-suited time to visit is in autumn when the surrounding foliage turns red and yellow, or in spring amidst fields of yellow rapeseed blossoms.
