Hongcun Village (China)

Weather…

Hongcun Village, located in Yi County, Anhui Province, is an exceptional example of traditional Huizhou-style architecture and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. Founded in 1131 during the Southern Song Dynasty, the village is famous for its sophisticated water management system, designed in the shape of an ox. A network of channels directs fresh spring water to every household before feeding into two central landmarks: the crescent-shaped 'Moon Pond' and the expansive 'South Lake.' The remarkably preserved residences from the Ming and Qing Dynasties feature iconic white walls, grey tiled roofs, and intricate wood and stone carvings that reflect the wealth of the local merchants. Hongcun is not merely a museum but a living community that often serves as a backdrop for cinematic masterpieces, including the Academy Award-winning 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.' The harmonious integration of architecture with the surrounding hilly landscape and the striking reflections in the water make it one of China's most pretty villages, drawing countless artists and photographers each year.
