The historic metropolis of Suzhou is world-renowned for its exquisite classical gardens, which are widely considered absolute masterpieces of traditional Chinese landscape design. The magnificent Humble Administrator's Garden and the intimate Master of the Nets Garden are first-rate and impeccably preserved examples of the philosophical harmony between wild nature and fine architecture. Beyond the fantastic gardens, the romantic city enchants its visitors primarily with pretty canals densely lined with weeping willows and old, artfully arched historic stone bridges. Suzhou also proudly looks back on a very long and highly successful tradition of producing extremely high-quality silk and intricate, delicate embroidery. From the megacity of Shanghai, Suzhou can be reached extremely comfortably in just about 30 minutes by modern high-speed train. A visit is highly recommended especially during the mild spring or the colorful autumn, when the gardens show their most beautiful side.
