Baoding is situated in the heart of Hebei Province, approximately 140 kilometers southwest of Beijing, and served for centuries as a strategic shield for the capital. The city has a rich history dating back to the Warring States period and was for a long time the capital of Zhili Province during the Qing Dynasty. A cultural jewel of the city is the Ancient Lotus Flower Pond, one of northern China's most famous classical gardens, established as early as the Yuan Dynasty. Baoding is also renowned for its culinary specialty, the donkey meat burger, which is cherished across the country. In the modern era, the city has emerged as a pioneer in the solar and wind energy industries, hosting major companies in the renewable energy sector. Additionally, it is the seat of several important universities and research institutes, making it an educational hub of the region. Its geographical location between Beijing, Tianjin, and Shijiazhuang makes Baoding a central component of the economic integration of the North. Despite modernization, the city preserves its historical monuments, such as the Ming-era imperial archive building, which speak of its past administrative significance.
