Handan, located in the southern part of Hebei Province, is one of China's oldest cities, boasting a continuous history of over 3,000 years. The city gained particular prominence as the capital of the State of Zhao during the Warring States period, serving as a hub of culture, economy, and military strategy. Uniquely, Handan has retained its name unchanged for three millennia, a rare occurrence in Chinese history. The city is closely associated with numerous Chinese idioms (Chengyu) that originated from local historical events. Significant landmarks include the ruins of the Zhao capital and the Wuling Terrace, which bear witness to its former grandeur. Geographically, Handan lies at the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains and is today a major site for the iron and steel industry. In modern times, the city has evolved into a significant transportation hub and economic center within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Despite industrial expansion, Handan strives to preserve its archaeological treasures and the cultural heritage of the ancient Zhao civilization for future generations.
