Geoglyphs of Pintados (Chile)

Weather…

The Geoglyphs of Pintados are located in the Atacama Desert in the Tarapacá Region and form one of the world's most significant concentrations of such artworks. Along a stretch of about four kilometers, more than 450 figures were scraped into the hillsides or shaped with stones. These geoglyphs were created between 700 and 1500 AD by pre-Columbian cultures and depict humans, animals, and geometric patterns. Archaeologists suggest they served as markers for caravans, ritual symbols, or territorial boundaries. The arid climate of the Atacama Desert has preserved these fragile artworks for centuries. Today, they are part of the Pampa del Tamarugal National Reserve and offer a deep insight into the spiritual and practical lives of ancient desert peoples. Visitors can observe these monumental depictions from designated walking trails.

Visiting
The Geoglyphs of Pintados are an open-air archaeological site that can be freely viewed from designated paths. Entry is typically allowed during daylight hours, though some areas may be off-limits to preserve the delicate carvings.
🕒
Typical hours
Since the site is in an open desert area, it is usually accessible from sunrise to sunset without a fixed closing time. There are no official opening hours, but guided tours often operate in the morning or late afternoon to avoid extreme heat.
📷
Photography
Photography of the geoglyphs is generally permitted, and the low-angle sunlight in early morning or late afternoon provides the best contrast. Using a drone may require special permission, so check local regulations beforehand.
⏱️
Time needed
Plan at least 1.5 to 2 hours to walk the main trail and view the most significant figures from the viewing platforms. For a deeper appreciation, consider spending extra time with a guide to learn about the pre-Columbian culture.
Combine with
Combine your visit with the nearby Cerro Unita geoglyph complex or the town of Iquique for a full day of desert history. The Pica Oasis and the Humberstone saltpeter works are also within driving distance.
🧭
Getting there
The geoglyphs are located about 90 minutes from Iquique by car, typically via Route 16. A 4WD vehicle is recommended as the last section is on unpaved roads; guided tours from Iquique often include transport.
💡
Insider tip
Bring plenty of water, sun protection and a hat, as there is no shelter on the desert slopes. Wind can be strong, so a light jacket and a dust mask are practical additions.
