Santa Laura Saltpeter Works (Chile)

Weather…

The Santa Laura Saltpeter Works, located in the Atacama Desert, bear witness to Chile's industrial boom during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Along with the neighboring Humberstone works, they were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005. Founded in 1872, Santa Laura was dedicated to the extraction and processing of nitrate, also known as 'white gold,' which was exported globally as fertilizer and for the production of explosives. The site features impressive remains of processing machinery, including the vertical crusher and the prominent leaching plant, as well as social facilities for the labor force. Life in these isolated 'Pampa' settlements was defined by arduous physical labor under harsh desert conditions. Following the decline of the nitrate industry in the 1930s, the plant was eventually shuttered in 1960. Today, it serves as an open-air museum that documents the history of this global industry and its profound impact on Chilean society and the surrounding landscape.
