Chacabuco Saltpeter Works (Chile)

Weather…

The Chacabuco Saltpeter Works is a former nitrate mining town located in the Atacama Desert, approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Antofagasta. Established in 1924, it was one of the most modern facilities of its era, utilizing the Shanks system to extract 'white gold.' The settlement featured a cinema, a hotel, a hospital, and extensive residential areas strictly divided by social status. Following the global economic crisis and the rise of synthetic fertilizers, the works were shut down in 1940, leaving the site as a vast ghost town. A dark chapter began in 1973 when the Chilean military dictatorship repurposed the abandoned town into a concentration camp for political prisoners. The camp was closed in 1974, and the site was later designated a National Monument. Today, the crumbling walls and rusted machinery serve as a poignant reminder of both Chile's industrial boom and its political tragedies. The site is now visited as a museum for saltpeter history and human rights, aiming to preserve the memory of the victims of the regime.
