Humberstone Saltpeter Works (Chile)

Weather…

The Humberstone Saltpeter Works, originally named La Palma, is located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile and stands as one of the most significant testaments to the industrial era of the saltpeter boom. Founded in 1872, the plant evolved into a bustling center for nitrate extraction, a product in high demand globally for fertilizers and explosives. Humberstone and the neighboring Santa Laura works formed a self-contained community with schools, theaters, and stores for the workers and their families. Following the decline of the nitrate industry due to the invention of synthetic nitrogen, the works were permanently closed in 1960. Today, it is a ghost town whose abandoned wooden and corrugated iron buildings create an eerie yet fascinating atmosphere. Because of its exceptional historical significance, Humberstone was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005. Visitors can explore the well-preserved structures that offer a glimpse into the harsh lives of the pampa workers, known as pampinos.
