Puerto Río Tranquilo is a tiny, windswept village in southern Chile, situated on the western shore of the massive General Carrera Lake. For travelers journeying along the Carretera Austral, it is one of the most important stops, as boat tours to the region's most famous geological formation depart from here. The settlement's infrastructure is basic, but the natural environment compensates for everything. The main attraction is the Capillas de Mármol, a network of marble caves. Carved by waves over thousands of years, the complex cave system beautifully reflects the lake's unreal turquoise waters on its walls. Not only motorboats but also kayak tours depart from the village, offering a much more intimate experience. Beyond the caves, the spectacular Exploradores Glacier can also be accessed from here, offering thrilling ice trekking excursions. The village is mostly reached by rental car or bus driving along the gravel roads of the Carretera Austral from the direction of Coyhaique. Local restaurants are simple, but trying the freshly caught lake trout and traditional asado (Chilean barbecue) is highly recommended. The optimal time to visit is during the summer months (December to February) when the water level is first-rate for entering the caves.
