Massenya is a town of profound historical significance in southwestern Chad, currently serving as the capital of the Chari-Baguirmi Region. Established in 1522, it served for centuries as the majestic capital of the powerful Baguirmi Sultanate, one of the most influential empires in the Central Sudanic region. Geographically, the town is situated on a broad plain east of the Chari River, an area traditionally utilized for seasonal agriculture and livestock grazing. Throughout its turbulent history, Massenya endured several cycles of destruction and reconstruction, most notably during the late 19th-century conflicts with the conqueror Rabih az-Zubayr. Despite the loss of its former imperial stature, Massenya remains a critical cultural symbol and heritage center for the Baguirmi people. The contemporary local economy is primarily anchored by cotton and grain production, along with traditional crafts, while the town operates as a key administrative hub for regional governance.
