The town is surrounded by monumental earthen walls that once stood up to 7 meters high, protecting the inhabitants from invasions. Goulfeil was a prominent city-state of the Sao people, deriving its influence from its strategic location and prosperity from fishing and river trade. The local museum houses an extraordinary collection of Sao artifacts, including ceremonial masks, bronze works, and massive pottery vessels.
