Goulfeil Sao Settlement (Chad)

Weather…

Goulfeil is a historic fortified town on the banks of the Logone River, on the border between Cameroon and Chad, widely regarded as one of the most important centers of the Sao culture. The town is surrounded by monumental earthen walls that once stood up to 7 meters high, protecting the inhabitants from invasions. Goulfeil was a prominent city-state of the Sao people, deriving its influence from its strategic location and prosperity from fishing and river trade. The local museum houses an extraordinary collection of Sao artifacts, including ceremonial masks, bronze works, and massive pottery vessels. The architecture of the town serves as a prime example of traditional fortification techniques in the Lake Chad basin, utilizing sun-dried mud as the primary building material. To this day, the people of Goulfeil maintain their traditional social structures under the leadership of a Sultan. The town is not only an archaeological gem but also a lively cultural hub where the myths of the Sao giants live on through oral traditions and annual festivals.
