Tibati lies in Djérem Department of the Adamawa Region on the western shore of Lake Mbakaou, one of Cameroon's largest reservoirs, regulating the Sanaga River and feeding the Edéa hydroelectric plant. With about 40 000 inhabitants, the town is an important fishing and administrative centre in a vast Guinea savanna. The population is predominantly Mbum and Fulbe, with smaller Gbaya and Tikar communities. The economy rests on freshwater fishing, yams, groundnut farming, cattle herding and a growing timber and bamboo craft sector. The nearby Mbam-Djérem National Park is one of the country's largest continuous protected areas, sheltering chimpanzees, Western Goliath frogs, elephants and rare birds. The tropical climate with a long rainy season from April to October keeps the savanna green and supplies the reservoir with abundant water.
